Thanks to recent investment, Scotland has come a long way since it’s first lifts opened in 1956. Now boasting 5 resorts (Caringorm, Glenshee, Lecht, Glencoe and the Nevis range), Scotland offers slopes for all levels, alongside world-class backcountry skiing for those wanting to venture beyond the pistes. Those skiing on a budget will also be catered for, with day passes starting from just £15 for the Nevis range. Whilst conditions on the slopes can vary, the new snow-making capabilities help to ensure Scotland contains reliable resorts to visit, just make sure you round off your day with a plate of haggis.
Further south, the Afriski ski resort in Lesotho isn’t your typical skiing destination. Located in the Maluti mountains and comprising one of only two ski resorts in the whole of Southern Africa, Afriski operates in a similar manner to most European resorts, albeit with just 1.7km of runs! Whilst expert runs might be few and far between, families can spend time on the snow park and enjoy activities such as bum-boarding and tubing. Finally, in South Africa we have the Tiffindell ski resort, situated on the highest mountain in Eastern Cape: the Ben Macdhui. Voted number 19 in CNN’s ‘world best ski runs’ in 2014, Tiffindell hosts the annual South African International Ski Federation (FIS) Championships. With great snow making equipment, you can be sure the 2km of slopes will be well covered throughout the winter.
